Introducing Alchemy Glass & Light: Luminous Glass Art for Inspired Interiors
Hand-crafted sinkswhich showcase an organically-evolving color palettebring a mystical quality indoors.
Los Angeles, CA Alchemy Glass & LightAncient alchemists believed that, under the correct astrological conditions, lead could be “perfected” into gold. They tried to hasten this transformation by heating and refining the metal in a variety of chemical processes, most of which were kept secret. Fast forward to the present and surprisingly this historical method is still being practiced by Alchemy Glass & Light. Under the direction of artist Steve Weinstock, who has worked with glass for over 15 years, Alchemy is known for its vast collections of kaleidoscope-colored glass sinks. However, instead of trying to transform lead into gold, Weinstock uses precious metals and minerals, which he experiments with through different temperature progressions to create naturally-occurring, vivid color palettes. In an industry where most sinks are mass produced, Alchemy creates all of their functional and hand-crafted, Art for the BathTM from their Los Angeles-based facility.
“Our sinks have a very old world quality,” says Weinstock. “I don’t pinpoint them as modern because there is nothing precise about them. However, like an old master in a stark modern gallery, they can enliven the most contemporary of spaces.”
When experimenting with materials to use in his creations, he has even gone so far as to include paper money and metal scrub pads. While, no one can predict which colors will magically evolve during the manufacturing process, one can ensure that no two sinks will be exact replicas. Weinstock is constantly creating new prototypes in addition to his burgeoning collection, with most sinks taking up to ten days to craft.
The most recent creationpart of Weinstock’s signature Celestial Seriesfeatures thin slices of glass, which take him hours to artfully arrange within the glass panels before they are fused together to form the sink. This sink reminds him of Jasper Johns’ Cross Hatch Series. However, like all Alchemy sinks he hopes that in 10 years he will continue to see new things in them. “There is a very magical element inherent in creating these sinks,” says Weinstock. “I feel like I am throwing all of these different and yet individually, precious materials into a pot and while I have no control over their evolution, all properties come together for a completely unique work of art.”

Alchemy Sink Collections include:
CIENEGA SERIES: The timeless Cienega Series, which was the first collection to debut, continues to serve as a launch pad for future designs. The majority of products in this series are the result of fusing layers of glowing hot glass together; trapping precious metals and minerals from within to produce a dramatic color palette. During the heating process colors evolve organically. The result is a masterpiece, as evidenced by the Velvet Cienega whose rich copper center bleeds into a cool marine base color. The sink is further enhanced with wisps of smoke gray or flecks of blue, magenta and gold. Designs range from the Cienega Fireworks, with blasting puffs of coppery red, to the Fallen Leaves vessel embedded with iridescent, delicate foliage to the Burnished Fossil, a geological work of art. Edge finishes include erosion or ground & polished.
CELESTIAL SERIES: The newest series to date showcases sinks with fragmented colors in a variety of marine and saturated hues, which are reminiscent of a meteor shower or the vast solar system. Rich with geometric and spherical shapes, the Celestial Series is the most contemporary of Alchemy collections. It contains Cosmic Burst, Terra Nova, Aqua Luna, Alchemy Mosaic, Retro Orbit and Aurora Bloom.
PRESTIGE SERIES: Alchemy sinks in pure gold and platinum serve as architecturally functional sculptures that add style and panache to the powder room. They are created by permanently fusing 23 karat gold and platinum to the sinks. The same low-iron, crystal clear glass is used for the platinum vessel, a sparkling white metal tour de force.
The Glacier sink’s exterior is subject to the traditional stained glass art of glue chipping, which peels glass flakes from the surface; resulting in an organic textured pattern that simulates melting ice. The sink boasts of a polished edge and soft green hue, which adds to the refreshing ambiance of the bathroom’s palette.
The solid Cast Bronze sink (57 pounds) hearkens the rustic quality of essential elements with its earthy aesthetic, textured exterior in a Patina finish and smooth honed interior.
